Our Holiday Season Opera is Amahl and the Night Visitors, which is a 1 act opera by Gian Carlo Menotti.  All performances are in English, with orchestra, costumes, and set.   

 

In this Christmas opera, the Three Kings are traveling to visit the baby Jesus and they rest at a house owned by a mother and her disabled son. Kids will enjoy the songs and dances, and the opera finishes with a surprising and happy ending. 

 

This is the first opera commissioned specifically for American television, and was presented for the first time on television in 1951. 

 

Menotti was inspired by The Adoration of the Magi (Hieronymus Bosch, died 1516) to create Amahl and the Night Visitors. [source: wikipedia]
